How to Run a Secret Santa That Everyone Enjoys
Before the draw
- Agree a budget. A single number everyone can afford, such as $20 or £15, stops one person turning up with a voucher and another with a hand-knitted scarf. Say whether it is a limit or a target.
- Set the date and the deadline. Pick the day gifts are swapped, and a date by which everyone must have bought theirs. For an office party in mid-December, draw names in the last week of November.
- Collect wish hints. Ask each person for two or three hints (a hobby, a favourite snack, "no candles please"). Pin them in the group chat so givers can check without asking.
Drawing names
Add everyone above, then reveal the pairs one person at a time on the same phone or laptop, passing it round so each person only sees their own name. The generator never pairs anyone with themselves.
