Classroom Routines That Work With a Name Wheel
Calling on students at random keeps everyone thinking, because anyone could be next. The trick is to make the wheel part of a routine, so it feels fair rather than like a pop quiz. These are the setups teachers use most:
- Think, then spin. Ask the question, give the whole class 20 seconds of thinking or a quick partner chat, then spin. Students who know they might be picked actually do the thinking, and the pause makes the answer better.
- Everyone once before anyone twice. Turn on elimination mode at the start of the lesson. Each name leaves the wheel when picked, so by the end of the week every student has had a turn. Reload the saved class list on Monday.
- Absent today, back tomorrow. In Settings, click the eye next to an absent student's name. They are hidden from the wheel without being deleted, so your list stays complete.
- Phone a friend. A picked student who is stuck can spin once more to choose a classmate to help. It keeps the pressure low and the class listening.
- Jobs and roles. Load a second list of classroom jobs (line leader, board cleaner, materials manager) from the templates below, and spin each Monday to hand them out.
- One list per class. Save a wheel for each period with its own title. The saved link reopens that class's names, so switching rooms takes one click.
Got the class list in a spreadsheet? Click Import CSV / Excel above the names, paste the column from Excel or Google Sheets, and pick the column with the names. It is read on your device and never uploaded. To split the class into groups instead of picking one student, use the random team generator. For more ideas, see how teachers use a random name picker.
A random name wheel and name spinner for classrooms and teams
A random name wheel works because everyone can see it. When the wheel picks, the class watches it slow down and stop, so the choice is clearly nobody's favorite. That matters most with younger students, but it works just as well with adults: the same name spinner settles who presents first in a team meeting or who leads the next warm-up.
Set the wheel up once and it keeps working for you. Paste the class list, hide anyone who is away, and turn on elimination mode when you want every person to have a turn before anyone goes twice. Save a wheel for each group and you can switch classes in a single click. If you'd rather start from a general name picker wheel for draws, game nights or giveaways, the wheel of names is the same fair wheel without the classroom setup. Either way, each spin comes from your browser's secure random generator, so every name on the wheel has the same chance.
Name Wheel FAQ for Teachers
Is the name wheel selection truly random and fair?
Yes. The name wheel uses your browser's cryptographically secure random number generator, so every student on the wheel has exactly the same chance on every spin. The fairness page runs 100,000 spins to show it.
Can I use this for virtual or remote learning?
Yes. Share your screen on Zoom, Teams or Google Meet and spin the wheel to call on students. Everyone sees the same spin, so nobody can say you picked on them.
How many student names can I add to the wheel?
As many as you need. Type them one per line, paste a class list, or import a column from Excel or Google Sheets. The wheel resizes the slices to fit.
How do I skip a student who is absent today?
Open Settings, then click the eye icon next to their name in the entry list. They come off the wheel for now but stay saved in your list, so you just click the eye again tomorrow.
How do I make sure every student gets a turn before anyone repeats?
Turn on elimination mode in Settings. Each student leaves the wheel once picked, so the wheel works through the whole class. Reload your saved list to start the next round.
Does the wheel work on tablets and phones?
Yes. It runs in any modern browser, works with touch, and can be added to your home screen like an app, so it is ready on the classroom tablet or your phone.
